Blind as a Bat

If I lived in the Stone age, God help me I would've been one of the first to die. I certainly would not have been part of the elite "survival of the fittest" club. My vision started deteriorating when I was in first grade, and since then I have become severely myopic (near sighted). I actually have a hole in the back of the retina because my eyes are so deformed, which is closely being observed right now. So back in the caveman days, if I hadn't already been chased down and eaten by a panther, I would've already killed myself by running into a tree. Finding a pair of well fitting glasses have been pretty difficult for me over the years.

Every pair of prescription glasses I got in the past, I always ended up with a bad case of "Heavy coke bottle lenses repeatedly sliding to my nares" syndrome. You know what I'm talking about. In residency, I had to tape my glasses to my forehead when I performed sterile procedures in the ICU so that they wouldn't fall off. Talk about embarrassing!
I'm happy to say that my search for glasses is over. I renewed my prescription this year, and was lucky enough to find a team of wonderful ladies who work at EyeQ Eyewear, who introduced me to Alain Mikli glasses. These carefully handcrafted glasses factored lens weight into the equation, and is made such that the ear pieces are heavier in the back to balance out the front. GENIUS! The lens itself is the thinnest I have ever gotten (despite my ridiculous prescription of -9.5R and -8.5L), held intricately together by a unique french designed, durable titanium frame. As long as my eyes don't get worse, I may wear these glasses for the rest of my life.
Outfit: Back to school Inspired
Dress: Theory
Eyeglasses: Alain Mikli from EyeQ Eyewear

A thousand thank you's to Tammy and Simona at EyeQ eyewear for your help. I can actually SEE now, and I don't have to tape my glasses to my forehead anymore! Thank you Mayo Insurance, for your generous eye insurance/stipend for making this affordable for our family :)

  1. First - that photo of Grace is so flippin' adorable I don't even know what to do right now! Ah! So cute!
Second - my eyesight is quite as bad as yours but I honestly do think about how lame it would have been if I was born some other time without glasses or contact lenses... and then my daydreams of living in a yesteryear diminishes and I go back to having nightmares about being kidnapped at night without my glasses & not being able to see to escape. Morbid. I know!
These glasses look so great on you, and they especially look smart with your gorgeous dress :) I'm glad you were able to find a pair that make you feel beautiful & fashionable, and that are functional as well! Bonus :)
    Have a beautiful day, Christy!

  3. That corn photo is adorable! I actually would have probably been the first one to die as I am -10.5/-11! I pretty much always wear contact lenses and have glasses for emergency use only. I started wearing contacts when I was six years old because my eyes were deteriorating so quickly and gas permeable lenses apparently can help slow vision loss. I've since switched to soft contacts and am always jealous of those with 20/20 vision. Love your Theory dress... so pretty and classic! I always drool over the Theory/Vince section at Nordstrom and one of these days I'll find an excuse to treat myself to something. :) Have a great day!

  4. I wore glasses since 10th grade and hated them. I finally had Lasik done 3 years ago and it's probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. You look beautiful in that dress. I love the background. Happy Friday, Christine!

  5. That dress is SO gorgeous on you - it definitely looks like it was made especially for you!

I don't have to wear glasses, which I am so thankful for, but my husband has recently gone down that path... he is still looking for the perfect pair!

  6. Holy crap, -9 and -8.5? And I thought I was bad! But your first line really cracked me up “If I lived in the Stone age, God help me I would've been one of the first to die. I certainly would not have been part of the elite "survival of the fittest" club” hahah. That’s crazy that you have a hole in your retina, I think my sister had similar problems and then was put on steroids. Actually, she had issues with her eyes all her life, which eventually inspired her to become an eye doctor. Your glasses are super chic, but curious to know, have you ever considered Lasik?

  7. yeah, near sight is annoying for girls who have to do makeup everything like me--frame glasses cover the eyes up and contact lenses are drying at end of each day. but I just don't have the courage to do laser surgery for eyes:) maybe you can try?

  8. Cute and comfy outfit even in the woods! I do know where my life would be without contacts so I know how you feel!

  14. I have the luck to be 100% healthy sight-wise, but I am aware of the struggle it means and I am really glad you find "the" pair. Also, I feel like a lot of times people are not wearing the right shape of glasses and therefore do not look as good as they could, but those look really flattering on you!
Loving the teacher-esque outfit, and I just died with your daughter's corn picture. Too much adorable in one frame for me to handle.

  22. Haha me too babe! I have been wearing glasses since I was 7. Actually I thought they were pretty cool then but the glasses kind of got on to my nerves when I was doing sports. Went for a lasik operation in the end and that was pretty life changing to me who has been half blind for so many years. That's an amazing pair of glasses for you!

  24. I had lasik a couple of years ago and I couldn't be happier with how everything went. Not having to deal with glasses or contacts have been fantastic. I have some of the typical Asian features (flat nose and big cheeks) so glasses never fit right for me. If I can look as good as you do in glasses though, I probably wouldn't mind wearing them.

  25. Hehe, omg I just wrote about being blind as a bat today!!! How funny :) Glad to know I'm not alone :) I hope I'm able to find a pair that fit me too so I don't have to abuse my eyes any longer :) My prescription is up there with yours - I don't joke when I tell people they could commit crimes in front of me and I would never know lol. You look so cute with your glasses on! :)

  27. From the very beginning you had me nodding and laughing along with your post. I also have a horribly strong prescription (-9.5 in both eyes) and have never met someone in the same boat. I tried to get laser eye surgery a few years ago and was actually turned away. When my husband and I got into The Walking Dead last year I remember telling him that if a zombie apocalypse ever happened he would have to go it alone because lord forbid I didn't have my glasses on me, I'd be a goner! That's awesome that you've finally found a pair that considers the weight of the lens and fits your face beautifully.

  41. Gorgeous dress... which fits you perfectly! And I'm the same way - coke bottle lenses and all! Even after going through 2 bouts of eye surgery to correct my vision, I'm back where I started - ugghh. But, now I just look at glasses as an accessory, and am having fun with them. And those glasses certainly look like a lot of fun! Enjoy them :)
